Transitional Kindergarten
Transitional Kindergarten at Campbell Christian Schools
What is Transitional Kindergarten at CCS?
Transitional kindergarten is an early education grade designed to provide foundational skills prior to
Kindergarten for students who are four on or before September 1. Our transitional kindergarten builds
on our pre-kindergarten program’s emphasis on play, socialization, general skill exposure,
developmentally appropriate phonemic awareness, early literacy, and mathematics curriculum.
What is taught in Transitional Kindergarten?
The transitional kindergarten curriculum adds a developmentally appropriate structure and focuses on
early literacy and foundational learning in mathematics, technology, social studies, and Bible. It
continues our strong emphasis on social-emotional development and also provides learning experiences
in fine arts and physical education. Our transitional kindergarten program utilizes the same English
Language Arts (SAVVAS), Mathematics (Singapore Math), and Bible (ACSI) curriculum as our K-5 program.
Our transitional kindergarten program strongly emphasizes phonemic awareness skills as a foundation
for literacy: rhyme, onset fluency, phoneme isolation, blending, segmenting, adding, deleting, and
substituting. We utilize the 35-week Heggerty Phonemic Awareness program, including letter names,
sound recognition, and language awareness via nursery rhymes.
Staffing and Class Size
CCS Transitional Kindergarten teachers are all degreed. Most importantly, they are committed Christians
and active members of a Christian community. Transitional kindergarten classes maintain a maximum of
12 to 1 child/adult ratio.
